Liminal Becomings: Reframing human-animal relations in disasters
[CEECIND/02719/2017]
This is an individual research project, which granted me a CEEC research contract in 2019. It explores the relational continuum between human and non-human animals, how their experiences are entangled in the experience of disasters.
Some of the research questions addressed are:
- How are animals taken into account in risk management strategies?
- How are their lives affected by disasters?
- How are human-animal relations reconfigured in face of the catastrophe?
Beyond the risks to endangered species and related ecosystems, this research highlights the need to consider the diversity of human-animal bonds in emergency response, as non-human animals, including companion animals, are among the most vulnerable living beings in a disaster.
